About the Basset Hound
The sad eyes and the long ears make a Basset hound desirable to most individuals. The breed is specifically used to hunt rabbits. The dog's low body to the ground, hound nose, and ears makes the dog an extremely suitable pet for those people who have space constraints. The breed is less than fourteen inches long with short legs, heavy bones, and a long body.
The Basset hound is a very friendly breed and loves humans. Although, the dogs belonging to this breed are short, they weigh between fifty-five and seventy-five pounds. Generally, a Basset hound is a gentle animal with a hound voice that can be annoying, as these animals tend to howl their unhappiness to all people within hearing distance.
One of the features of this breed is its excessive drooling. The reason being the flews that enable the Basset hound to funnel any scent to its nose. Therefore, if you cannot endure the drooling, then you should not acquire this breed.
Another feature of this breed is that the animal is not expensive to feed. Therefore, you should never let a Basset hound beg to be overfed. Excess dog food may lead to health problems and hence should be avoided. To ensure that the dog is in good health condition, you should be able to feel the ribs without their being seen and a mild rise from profile behind the ribs should be visible.
The breed has a short coat that requires brushing once a week to eliminate any loose hairs. The ears and the teeth need regular care. The Basset hound dog breed is a healthy breed but there are some serious medical problems that you need to watch out for. These include Von Willebrand disease, which is a clotting disorder, bloating that may be fatal, and glaucoma.
